US-listed companies above $300m, less Financials and Real Estate: 1,877 names — 536 large ($10bn+), 648 mid ($2–10bn), 693 small ($300m–2bn). Outer ring is the bottom 20% of the 52-week range. The inner ring needs quality 70+, moat and balance sheet of 50+ and no other filter below 25, healthy finances, earnings backed by cash, and net debt under 4 years of owner earnings.

FilterWeightWhat it measures
Moat40%Return on capital — its level, worst year and steadiness — plus gross margin
Balance sheet20%Liabilities to assets, excluding capitalised leases
Consistency15%Years with positive earnings and owner cash flow
Growth15%Revenue and owner-earnings CAGR
Capital allocation10%Five-year change in diluted share count
  • Price comes last. Munger's fourth filter, so it sets timing, not membership. Names below the 5.12% hurdle are shown in silver, with the price they would need.
  • Cycle-neutral cheapness. Ten-year median owner earnings, not trailing — D.R. Horton earned 5× its median, turning a 1.5% yield into an apparent 7.6%.
  • Two corrections. Buybacks break ROE, so those fall back to ROIC; leases are not debt (TJX 0.74 → 0.42, while Charter only moves 0.90 → 0.89).
  • Gates, not an average. A strength in one filter never offsets a failure in another. Without the floors, Charter, Las Vegas Sands and Verisk qualified on returns while owing 9×, 13× and 19× equity. Book leverage alone misses debt the cash flow has to carry, so net debt is also capped at 4 years of owner earnings.
  • Roughly 2½ of Munger's four filters. Circle of competence is not computable; share count is a weak proxy for honest management.
  • Sectors. GICS for S&P 500 members; Nasdaq's classification, mapped to GICS names, for everything else.
  • 188 of 478 could not be screened — inconsistent XBRL tagging or no revenue yet, drawn hollow. Not a quality judgement.
  • Risk is reported, and two parts of it gate. Each drawn name gets three checks, rated low, medium or high: price (trend against the 50- and 200-day averages, a fresh 52-week low, three- and six-month returns, volatility, beta against SPY), financial health (Altman Z-score below 1.8 is the distress zone; operating profit under 1.5× interest; Piotroski F-score of 3 or less of its nine checks) and earnings quality (the warning badges). High financial distress, or profit that cash flow doesn't back up, keeps a name out of the inner ring. Overall is High on financial distress alone, or on two other high checks (short interest counts); Low when every check is low but at most one. A falling price on its own does not make a name High: on a near-lows screen it is the norm.
  • Signals. Insiders: open-market buys and sells by officers and directors over six months, from SEC Form 4 (grants, option exercises and 10% owners are left out; pre-arranged 10b5-1 sales are marked). Short sellers: FINRA's latest twice-monthly report, as a share of diluted shares outstanding, which understates the share of float. Congress: trades in the last year from Mr. Congress.
  • Educational only — not investment advice. A stock near its low is there for a reason this cannot see.
